ISLAMIC, Mongols. Ilkhanids. Arghun, AH 683-690 / AD 1284-1291. Dinar (Gold, 26 mm, 4.29 g, 3 h), Tabriz (?), date effaced. Within a circle, ‘al-ḥamd lillāh / lā ilāha illā Allāh / Muḥammad rasūl Allāh / ṣalla Allāh ʿalayh / wa sallam’ (‘Praise be to Allah. There is no deity but Allah. Muhammad is the messenger of Allah. May Allah bless him and grant him peace’ in Arabic); in the margin, mint and date formula, mostly effaced. Rev. Within a dotted circle, ‘[Hakanu Ariba] / Argunun / Deledkeguluk / sen Arigu’, followed by the word ‘altan’ in the right field (‘Struck by Arghun, the vice-regal governor of the Khan. Pure gold’ in Uighur); at the bottom, ‘Arghūn’ (‘Arghun’ in Arabic). Album 2144. Diler AR-155. Rare. The reverse struck off center, otherwise, very fine.
